We are a Unique and Creative Landscape Design Studio located in The San Francisco Bay Area.

We specialize in Planning and Developing Modern Zen Gardens and Traditional Japanese Gardens that are Artistic, Elegant, and Transformational.

We Design and Build Mindful, Holistic, Structurally Sound and Ecologically Functional Landscapes and Healing Gardens that Awaken and Connect people with Nature. 

Preston Louis Dixon : started Bio Friendly Gardens in 1995 and it evolved into Zen Master Gardens years later.

Dixon earned degrees in Plant and Soil Science, Landscape Design, and Natural Resource Management from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1981 and 1983.

He earned a Certificate in Landscape Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley in 1994, and Kyoto University of Art & Design in Japan.

He is a trained Landscape Architect, Garden Designer, Horticulturist, Forest Ecologist, and Entomologist. He worked and studied as a Plant Biologist and Insect Ecologist for 12 years at The Center for Biological Control and The Department of Plant Biology at UC Berkeley.

Haruna Kubota : Co Founded  Zen Master Gardens.

Kubota earned a Degree in Mathematics from Tsuda University in Tokyo, Japan in 1991, and an International Business Degree from The University of California at Berkeley in 2000.

She is office manager, accountant, designer, plant collector, propagator, and nursery manager for Bio Friendly Gardens and Zen Master Gardens in Berkeley, CA.

Our Clients.

We work closely with clients and architects on a variety of projects in both residential and commercial settings. Our residential design ranges from small urban gardens, suburban, and hillside gardens, to rural ranches, farms, and estates.

Our commercial properties include wineries, restaurants, hotels, resorts, botanic gardens, rooftop gardens, temple gardens, educational campuses, museums, hospitals, and more.
